AREAS AFFECTED: Niagara; Orleans; Monroe; Wayne; Northern Cayuga; Genesee

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of one inch or less. Freezing rain accumulations of a quarter to a half inch. * WHERE...Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Genesee Counties. * WHEN...From 5 AM early this morning to 1 AM EST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are possible in some areas due to the ice. The wintry mix and freezing rain may result in very slick conditions on untreated surfaces. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A wintry mix with more snow than freezing rain is expected across eastern Wayne and Northern Cayuga, resulting in locally reduced ice accumulations.

INSTRUCTION: Periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will result in slippery roads and limited visibilities. Slow down and use caution while driving. Submit snow and ice reports through our website or social media.

Stratus clouds are similar to altostratus clouds, but form at a lower altitude and are identified by their fog-like appearance, lacking the distinguishing features of most clouds.

Stratus clouds are wider than most clouds, and their base has a smooth, uniform look which is lighter in color than a nimbostratus cloud. The presence of a stratus cloud indicates the possibility of minor precipitation, such as drizzle, but heavier precipitation does not typically arrive in the form of a stratus cloud.

Similar to cirrocumulus clouds, altocumulus clouds are characterized by cloud patches. They are distinguished by larger cloudlets than cirrocumulus clouds but are still smaller than stratocumulus clouds.

Altocumulus clouds most commonly form in middle altitudes (between 2 and 5 km) and may resemble, at times, the shape of a flying saucer. These uncommon formations, called altocumulus lenticularis, are created by uplift in the atmosphere and are most often seen in close proximity to mountains.
